Review:

Summary:
The Thin Red Line is a story about the campaign at Guadelcanal during the second world war and the realities of war that surrounded the brutal fighting in the Pacific theater. Telling the story more through pictures and the thoughts of the soldiers rather than battles and tactics, this film presents the moral dilemmas facing soldiers in battle.
Why You Should See This Movie:
I am not sure if I liked the presentation of this movie so much but the filmmakers attempt was to create an artsy war movie in which they succeeded. The film is filled with fantastic scenery and symbolic shots of different animals, humans and backgrounds. The effects of the film were probably the best part of the movie. The cast is also very impressive with a long list of actors that have gone on to successful careers, with people like Sean Penn and Nick Nolte giving stirring performances.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
As mentioned above, I think of war movies as telling the story of battles and tactics first, and then possibly interjecting some moral themes and artistic points, but this film tried the opposite which I didnt particularly enjoy. Because of this style of presentation, I felt that the plot lacked continuity and power and felt like a jumbled mess of story.
Conclusion:
The Thin Red Line is an impressive art movie that just happnes to be about a war which can either be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective.
